A morning sketch that became a full-blown painting because it delighted me – not least because it led me to this 18th-century folk poem protesting against the enclosure of common land:
‘The law locks up the man or woman
Who steals the goose from off the common
But leaves the greater villain loose
Who steals the common from the goose.’
I like to think that these particular flock is being brought in from a good graze on the public common.
