‘Hiraeth’ is a beautiful Welsh word for that does not have a direct English translation. It means something like: a deep longing for or nostalgia for a home, place or time that is lost, or maybe never existed. It seemed to me perfect for this painting, which was inspired in part by my childhood – but also by the idealised childhood I wanted, and want to give my own children, but which is not really attainable.
Signed on the reverse side. The painting has been varnished to protect it over time.
